Summer Firebrand Internships

Undergraduate students or recent college graduates. 3 internship slots are available.

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW:

The Education Firebrands will work closely with the Director of Education and Outreach (DEO) to implement projects and support programs that are key to the growth and success of the Pauli Murray Center for History and Social Justice (PMCHSJ). The Firebrands will also work on personal development projects that will be created with guidance from the DEO.

The ideal Firebrands have experience with education, social and digital media, and graphic design, as well as strong written communication skills. They are creative, thorough, and detail-oriented. They are current undergraduate students, or recent college graduates, and have demonstrated interest in public history and social justice.

TIME COMMITMENT:

Hybrid full-time internship, including a one-hour weekly meeting with the DEO, 45-minute bi-weekly staff meetings, and other meetings as needed. Four days a week working for the PMCHSJ and one day spent working on personal projects.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Complete orientation materials, including a selection of reading materials by and about the Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray

  • Initiate collaborative, engaging, and creative social media campaigns that focus on public history and social justice

  • Creation and implementation of Firebrand Summer Social Justice Programming

  • Promote PMCHSJ and affiliates’ events 

  • Create and implement a personal development plan

  • Attend weekly staff meetings  

  • Communicate and work with fellow team members 

  • Other duties as assigned

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE NEEDED:

Experience with teaching, public speaking, and education

  • Video and photo editing skills

  • Graphic design skills

  • Interest and experience in public history and social justice 

  • Experience with social justice facilitation, curriculum development, or research preferred

  • Experience or interest in creating educational content for social media, especially relating to history, racial justice, faith, and/or LGBTQ+ issues

Proud Shoes First Book Fellowship

Book Workshop & Writing Retreat - October 2024

Facilitated by Dr. Stephanie Y. Evans (Georgia State University)

The Proud Shoes First Book Fellowship committee invites applications from scholars who are developing their first full academic book manuscript in history, social justice, politics, law, race, gender, and sexuality studies or related fields. The book manuscript can contribute to any discipline (humanities, social sciences, arts, politics, etc.), can be at any stage of development (proposal, first chapters, complete manuscript), but must be prepared for an academic press. Applicants can be at any stage in their career but must be working on a first book manuscript and have a definite timeline for completion.  

The goal of this fellowship is to provide critical feedback to new authors toward completion of a full-length book of scholarly work. Awardees in 2024 will spend one day at a virtual workshop. Awardees in 2025 will attend the workshop in person. Awardees from the first year cannot apply for the Fellowship the second year.

Eight awards will be offered (award will include a $1,000 stipend, meal voucher, and writing library). Incomplete applications will not be reviewed, and no late applications will be accepted.

    ESSAY

    Write a 2-page (single-spaced) application letter and include the following:

    · Working title and subtitle of your book

    · Brief description of your project (topic, argument, structure, sources, audience, etc.)

    · Publishing plan (where you have submitted or plan to submit your book proposal)

    TABLE OF CONTENTS

    Provide a draft table of contents with chapter descriptions (~250 words per chapter)

    CV or RESUME

    Send a full CV or resume

  • Letters of support should be provided by two recommenders (no more than two, please). The letters should come from those intimately familiar with your book project and who can speak to your completion plan.
