Design/Art Opportunity – Open Until Filled

Background: The Pauli Murray Center for History and Social Justice(PMC), a National Historic Landmark site in Durham, North Carolina is working toward the goal of opening full-time in 2020. PMC wants to offer visitors to our site an educational and inspirational experience. While we continue renovating Pauli Murray’s childhood home, the interior space is not yet available to the public. Therefore, we desire to create an opportunity for visitors that can be self-guided in the interim. For more information about the preservation of the Pauli Murray Family Home:

Mission:To build a more just and inclusive world, the Pauli Murray Center engages a diversity of communities to lift up the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray, a 20th century human rights activist, lawyer, feminist, poet and Episcopal priest with deep southern roots. As an African American, LGBTQ woman, Murray struggled to life fully in a world not ready for her inclusive vision of freedom.

Project: PMC is looking for a landscape architect/designer/artist to join our exhibit team with the goal of creating and installing the exhibit in May and June 2019. The team will be led by PMC executive director Barbara Lau who also curated the exhibit Pauli Murray: Imp, Crusader, Dude, Priestthat has been exhibited in Charlotte & Durham, NC and in New York City.

Time Frame: Part-time for 8-10 weeks, beginning May 1 and continuing through July 15, 2019

Compensation: $20 per hour for up to 15 hours per week for 10 weeks

Scope of Work

  • Collaborate with curators and graphic designer on overall goals for exhibit
  • Research exterior exhibit design ideas and create gallery of options for team to consider
  • Develop ideas for situating the exhibit elements on the grounds of the Pauli Murray Center
  • Offer input about how visitors might navigate the exhibit elements and help the team think about the environmental opportunities and challenges posed by the exhibit
  • Estimate costs and timeline for construction of exhibit elements once they are selected
  • Potentially participate in fabrication and installation of the exhibit at the site
