Civil & Activism Mapping

Duke students create new multi-media google map as part of class associated with the Pauli Murray Project

As a tribute to Durham’s exquisite, intriguing, sometimes hidden, but fascinating history, we decided to create this interactive map. The map markers detail information about prominent locations relating to civil and human rights in Durham through text, photographs, and audio documentary.

Please feel free to explore. This map is interactive and we welcome your suggestions of other pertinent markers. Please send suggestions and comments to Barbara Lau, Pauli Murray Project Director at balau@duke.edu.

With the guidance of Professor Barbara Lau, Students in Duke University’s Center for Documentary Studies course: “Civil/Human Rights Activism in Durham: In the Spirit of Pauli Murray”; Christie Barnes, Kamilah Barnette, Catalina Hidalgo and Kate Van Buskirk put this map together. Special thanks to the Duke University Staff, Charmaine McKissick-Melton, Linda Daniel, Cathy Abernathy and Preservation Durham, and everyone else who helped make this project possible!
